Los Angeles Sparks, Mystics catch fire.

The Washington Mystics picked up some momentum over the weekend, putting together back-to-back wins after beating Indiana Fever on Friday and the Los Angeles Sparks Sunday afternoon. Washington came out playing with confidence and energy, and it started inside with Kiki iriafen and Shakira Austin. The duo Sparked quickly and set the tone early. They showed that they weren’t going to be pushed around in the paint. The duo also gave Cameron Brink all she could handle in her debut in DC, causing Brink to get into early foul trouble, and unable to really establish herself or get any type of rhythm going throughout the game.

The sparks managed to get within three points late in the second half, behind a barrage of points coming from Kelsey Plum (25 points) and Dearica Hamby (26 points) but, it didn’t matter how much they combined for because they could not find the answer for Sonia Citron. Sonia was showing she could score from anywhere and at any time throughout the game. Whether it was pulling up from deep, or hitting a couple of midrange shots, Sonia kept it MOVIN and kept finding ways to keep the Mystics ahead late.

With Sonia scoring (24 points) at will, Kiki (18 points) and Shakira (14 points) controlling the inside, Washington made it clear they’re clicking right now, and this weekend was the proof. Now, let’s see if they have what it takes to late to squeak into a late playoff spot. The next game is against the Connecticut Suns on Tuesday August 19, 2025 and I’m curious to see were this team goes from here.
