Mystics Trio Shines in late loss to Surging Sparks.

The Washington Mystics opened Tuesday night’s matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks with intensity, jumping out to an 18–3 lead with 4:26 left in the first quarter behind sharp ball movement and strong interior play. However, after a dominant first quarter, The Mystics offense cooled off and the Sparks capitalized by outscoring the Mystics in the second quarter and ultimately flipping the momentum. Despite the Mystics staying within striking distance going into the fourth quarter, Washington ultimately fell to the Sparks 93–86 at home.

Shakira Austin anchored the Mystics with 17 points and 6 rebounds, showcasing her versatility on both ends of the court. Brittney Sykes added 18 points with her trademark slashing and defensive energy, while rookie Kiki Iriafen chipped in 13, continuing to show growth in the paint. The trio combined for nearly half of Washington’s total points, giving the team a strong inside presence despite the loss.

Now, while the Mystics came up short in the win column tonight, there’s a strong foundation being built in the nation’s capital — and it’s being built in the paint. If Austin’s steady hands, Sykes’ leadership, and Iriafen’s growth continues to trend upward, the Mystics could become a real problem down the stretch…. Can we say playoff run? Only time will tell.
